ABOUT OBJECTS CONSERVATION STUDIO

Sanchita Balachandran is the principal conservator at Objects Conservation Studio. She trained at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University where she earned graduate degrees in art conservation and art history. After her graduate work, Sanchita completed advanced-level internships at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Straus Center for Conservation, Harvard Art Museums (formerly the Harvard University Art Museums). She received the Baird Fellowship from the Harvard Art Museums in 2004 to complete research in China, France and England. In 2007, she was awarded a Professional Development Scholarship from the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation. In 2008, Sanchita received a Fulbright Award for nine months of research related to the history and development of metals conservation in India. She is a Professional Associate member of the American Institute for Conservation and maintains memberships in the International Council of Museums, the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, and the Western Association for Art Conservation. Sanchita is active in reviewing grants for the Institute of Museum and Library Services. A complete curriculum vitae is available upon request. She currently teaches courses in conservation history, ethics and practice at the Johns Hopkins University and Morgan State University.

Sanchita works closely with other conservators, museum professonals and contractors on projects on an as-needed basis.

The conservation studio is located in Baltimore, Maryland, and is a large, well-lit space with the following amenities:

  • Well-stocked studio with high quality conservation materials and conservation tools
  • Library with conservation reference books, journals and articles
  • Constant monitoring for relative humidity and temperature conditions
  • An on-site security system that is hardwired to a security monitoring company and the local police
  • Precautions taken for fire safety and fire suppression
  • On-site disaster recovery kit and a list of resources and individuals to call upon in case of an emergency
